Socialist City of New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani was officially sworn in as mayor at a midnight ceremony by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Thursday morning’s ceremony was a private ceremony where Mamdani was accompanied by family members at Old City Hall Station, a disused underground station with deep historical roots.

In a press release, Mamdani’s reform team said the midnight slur was chosen to be in a place that shows the subway system is “the lifeblood of New York” and “a reminder of the city that Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is fighting for: a city built and built by New Yorkers.”

“When the Old City Hall Station was opened for the first time in 1904 – one of the 28 underground stations of New York – it was a physical monument of a city that tried to be beautiful and build beautiful things that will change the lives of working people. That desire should not be a memory kept only in the past, and it should not be isolated only in the tunnel under the City Hall to serve adequately in the City Hall: it will be the office of New York City. Mamdani said the press release.

“When I take my oath of office at the beginning of the New Year, I will do so humbled by the opportunity to lead millions of New Yorkers into a new era of opportunity, and I am honored to carry forward the legacy of our city’s greatness.”

Mamdani used the Quran during his swearing-in ceremony, according to his campaign, making him the first Muslim mayor of NYC and the first to be sworn in using the Quran.

On Thursday afternoon, Mamdani will be publicly sworn in by Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders after opening remarks at his inauguration at 1 p.m. by another progressive, Dem. Attorney Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
