EXCLUSIVE — One of the consistent messages in the new movie “Her Reminders” is that prisons are home to some victims, too.
The film, based on Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name, follows a young woman, Kenna, whose fatal mistake behind the wheel leads to the death of her boyfriend, Scotty. Unbeknownst to her, Kenna was pregnant. Kenna gave birth while incarcerated and was kept with her daughter while serving her sentence. Now, he returns to the same town to ask for forgiveness from Scotty’s parents in hopes of reuniting with his 5-year-old daughter, Diem.
Director Vanessa Caswill hopes to remind the audience that one mistake shouldn’t ruin a person for the rest of their life.
“The human understanding is that people who are incarcerated aren’t really there because they’re a bad person,” Caswill told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. “Things happen and things lead to actions and, most of the time, actions are mistakes or mistakes or bad judgment. I think judgment is a very tricky thing because we all have mistakes, and we all make mistakes, and we all need a moment in our life where we want to be redeemed. So I think it’s important to be willing to give it again.”

Although Kenna has high hopes of making things right when she gets out of prison, she finds that Scotty’s parents are not warm or welcoming. They even filed a restraining order against him after a few too close incidents to comfort himself.
Caswill said he learned the power of forgiveness through his series of challenges.
“You know, I think I know very well how, in our personal lives, we can really choose to look at anything that comes our way, any challenge, with the eyes of love or fear, and obviously fear can take many forms,” she said. “And it’s very easy to fall into that, but to try to keep wandering and try to keep looking at whatever comes up, with an open heart, that’s what I’ve faced many challenges in my life, I started to look at it and feel like there’s something very inspiring about looking at the world through that lens.”

“Yes, it is, and I think that’s what I loved about this story, the way it conveys something dark into something light,” he continued. “And you can’t take away grief or pain, but you can change the way you look at it.”
