CatholicVote has launched a campaign to persuade President Donald Trump to reject a possible move to loosen restrictions on marijuana.

“Marijuana reformulation can falsely portray that it’s safe and medically proven, if it hasn’t gone through FDA approval or long-term safety studies,” Kelsey Reinhardt, president and CEO of CatholicVote, told Fox News Digital in a statement.

“That’s exactly how America fell asleep in the tobacco crisis — admit first, think later,” Reinhardt added. “We must not repeat that mistake. This is not about ambition or personal freedom; it is about protecting public health, children, and communities from a drug that is already doing real damage. States like Massachusetts are now trying to reduce recreational use. It is the $32 billion marijuana industry that wants the president to loosen restrictions even more. They are not interested in raising their children, but changing their lives for the better only in America. They are lifelong users of this highly addictive drug.”

On MondayTrump said he is considering classifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug.

Marijuana is currently a Schedule I controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act, which it defines as a drug of serious abuse without acceptable medical use.

Trump is considering classifying marijuana as a Schedule III drug, which would regulate it as a drug with moderate to low abuse potential, and permitted for treatment, but with moderate to high psychoactive dependence potential. It will remain illegal for recreational use.

Trump said he is “considering” making marijuana a Schedule III drug and said, “A lot of people want to see it, rescheduled, because it leads to a lot of research that can’t be done unless you reschedule.”

“Today’s marijuana is more potent than it was in the past, and its long-term effects are still being seen,” reads the CatholicVote campaign page. “Redrafting it now will repeat the sad history of Big Tobacco—license first, pay later. People don’t just get high. They get addicted, hospitalized and hurt. Tell President Trump to stop redistricting marijuana.”
