The San Francisco mayor’s security team attacked

A tense scene turned violent in San Francisco’s troubled Tenderloin neighborhood Thursday evening when Mayor Daniel Lurie’s car was blocked by several men, sparking an attack that left at least one police officer injured.

The confrontation happened around 5:40 pm near Cedar and Polk streets, the San Francisco Police Department confirmed to KTVU. The police who were assigned to protect the mayor got into an altercation with two unknown male suspects after the mayor’s car was stopped on the road.

A video from the scene shows a member of the security detail being taken to the ground while the police tried to subdue the suspects. One police officer sustained visible injuries during the altercation.

The mayor was not injured.

In a statement sent to Fox News Digital, Mayor Lurie’s press secretary Charles Lutvak said: “There was a dispute this evening involving the mayor’s security detail. The mayor was not involved. We appreciate our SFPD officers for their quick response and keeping our city safe every day.”

Lutvak directed additional questions to the San Francisco Police Department.

Police told KTVU that the altercation involved two unidentified males and that officers called for rescue as the situation escalated. Authorities have not said what led to the altercation or whether the suspects directly threatened the mayor.

Both suspects were arrested at the scene, police said. Their details have not been disclosed.

According to the police, two officers received non-life-threatening injuries and were examined by paramedics at the scene.

Photos published by Mission Local show one suspect on the ground in handcuffs surrounded by police. The newspaper reported that three people first blocked the mayor’s car. It is said that Lurie asked them to move. While one person started doing that, that person later became involved in a struggle with a member of the mayor’s security detail.

Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, confirmed that one union member was injured and praised the police response.

“The San Francisco Police Officers Association is relieved to learn that Mayor Daniel Lurie was not injured in the violent incident that occurred Thursday evening in the Tenderloin,” Wong said in a statement sent to Fox News Digital. “We are grateful that the police assigned to the mayor’s security unit worked quickly and bravely to protect him from a dangerous and unexpected situation.”

Wong added that additional SFPD officers quickly arrived at the scene to help bring the situation under control, praising their intelligence and commitment to protecting the public and officers sworn to protect it. He said the union wishes the injured police officer a full and speedy recovery.

The confrontation came hours after Lurie posted a message and video on Facebook calling for a reshuffle of the San Francisco government.

“San Francisco needs a reset. Our city charter is one of the longest in the country. It’s bloated. It’s broken,” Lurie wrote, announcing proposed changes aimed at consolidating the city’s contracting system, shortening and simplifying votes and increasing executive accountability.

“This reform package is about results. It’s about accountability. It’s about making City Hall work for San Francisco,” he wrote.

Fox News Digital reached out to the San Francisco Police Department, but did not immediately receive a response.
