NFL News: Patrick Mahomes seen throwing football 3 months after ACL tear

Patrick Mahomes suffered a serious knee injury that ended his 2025 season and completely ended the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff hopes.

Mahomes was injured on Dec. 14, 2025, in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers. A torn ACL usually takes about nine months for most athletes to recover and return to their sport. It would force Mahomes to return around Week 1 of the 2026 season.

While his status for the start of the 2026 regular season is up in the air, the star quarterback posted a video that will make any NFL fan excited for his return to the field.

“QB1 is back in the lab,” the Chiefs wrote on X.

The video showed Mahomes stepping back and throwing the ball. He was seen wearing a black compression sleeve on his leg. It was only a six-second clip, but he appeared to be making good progress in his rehabilitation program.

Mahomes spoke about his condition in January after the season.

“First of all, the rehab is going well so far. I’ve been hitting all the tests the doctor wants you to do and I’ve gotten the strength and the type of movement,” Mahomes said. “So, that’s been going great. I’ve been doing everything here in Kansas City so far. (Assistant athletic trainer) Julie (Frymyer) has been crushing it, pushing me. What kind of doctor gives you goals that you can reach, and I’m just trying to increase those, and they hold me back because I always want to go a little bit further. It’s been slow.

“I think for a long time, I want to be ready for Week 1. The doctor says I can be, but I can’t predict what will happen during the process but that is my goal, so I will try to prepare myself to be ready to play in that week 1 and not have restrictions. You want to be out healthy and give us the best chance to win. Obviously, I hope to be able to do some things so that I can train so that I can train. do a lot there. I am happy with the long process, but I’m happy with it.
