Bing Webmaster Tools explores the new AI Performance report

Microsoft has been promising to provide data on the performance of the websites mentioned in the AI results between Bing and Copilot since February 2023 and again in April 2023. But then it decided to reduce it and include only data and web queries, not giving us a clear idea of how our sites work within the Bing AI experience.

Now Bing is reportedly testing a new report within Bing Webmaster Tools called the AI performance report.

AI performance report. This report is currently in very limited beta – Microsoft has never announced anything about this publicly. But a source told us that the report shows quoted data from both Microsoft Copilot and its partners. It shows the number of citations and the number of cited pages per day.

You can see how many times Copilot has cited your website and on how many pages. It doesn’t show you how many people clicked from the quote in Copilot to your site.

It also allows you to see data listed by “basic queries” and “pages.” The basic query is probably not the full query entered into the search box in Copilot but how Bing interprets that query. Also, it will show you the “intent” behind the question, whether it’s navigation, information, or another type of question.

The report also shows you specific pages cited by Copilot.

ETA. Again, Microsoft hasn’t published this report yet but some are seeing it live within Bing Webmaster Tools under the Search Performance report called “AI Performance.” I don’t know when you or I will get the report.

Why do we care. It’s nice to see more AI performance reporting from Bing Webmaster Tools, but I really want click data. Every publisher, content creator, and site owner wants to know how the click-through rate from AI experiences compares to web search.

It seems that all search engines are deliberately hiding this data from us.
