Southwest Super Bowl ad ‘celebrates’ the change to the introduction of assigned seating

Southwest Airlines has created a new ad aimed at ‘celebrating’ the new assigned seat policy, which will air on Sunday, Feb. 8, in six markets.
Southwest Airlines will release a new ad during the Super Bowl mocking its new seating policy.
The ad, “Boarding Royale,” will air on Peacock and local cable stations in six markets, including San Diego, Chicago, Denver, Austin, Dallas and Honolulu, during Sunday’s big game, according to a Southwest news release.
The ad, which appears to be set in a forest, shows dozens of guests rushing to their seats after a voice says, “The southwest ride begins now.”

In what appears to be a hyperbolic representation of how travelers react during the company’s open seating process, the people in the video run to grab a seat.

“I thought you’d check on us at night?” asked the woman in the ad.
“I was a minute late,” replied the man who seemed to be walking with him.

The video also shows a woman swinging from a tree vine while screaming in what appears to be an attempt to get to her seat in time.

Then an on-screen text appears that says, “That was out of control,” followed by a couple sitting quietly in their seats and another on-screen card that says, “Reserved seats available.”
The ad “celebrates” the airline’s new shared seating model while “clap back to the days of open seating,” the company said in a release.

The company shared that viewers should see Southwest’s “self-aware humor” that the airline is known for.
Southwest says the new seating policy should “position the airline for the future.”

“While open seating has played a large role in Southwest’s history and helped it grow from a regional airline to one of America’s largest airlines, the new assigned seating policy positions the airline for the future and addresses the needs of customers,” Southwest said in a release.
The airline is new accommodation policy started working on Jan. 27. Customers now have a choice between “leg seat,” “preferred seat” and regular seat.

The company said the policy “provides [customers] more choices there [they] travel,” according to the airline’s website.
“For your convenience, we are introducing seat options that allow you to choose your preferred experience,” the airline said on its seating information page.

The Seattle Seahawks will face the New England Patriots on Sunday in the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
Despite these changes, Southwest assured customers that they should still expect the same “legendary” hospitality.
“Southwestern’s personality and humor have always been unique in the industry,” the release said. “No matter what the seat, the famous hospitality that customers expect from Southwest is still there.”
