The first medal event of the Milano Cortina Winter Games was the men’s downhill competition on Saturday, Feb. 7, no Swiss skier Franjo von Allmen by winning gold.

In the total medal count for all previous Summer and Winter Games, the US leads the way with 3,103 medals.
The US is trailed in the medal count by the former Soviet Union, which earned 1,204 medals before its breakup in 1991. Germany is third with 1,091 medals.
The US also won the most gold medals, with 1,220, according to the Olympic Foundation.
But when it comes to Winter Olympics history alone, the US sinks to second place in the number of medals behind Norway, the perennial winter sports arena.
Norwegian athletes took home a total of 404 medals at the last Winter Games. The US has won with 330, while Germany is in third place with 286.
