Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., remained silent Friday when his office was asked about New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s one-day orders to turn back the international Jewish community.

Among his first acts as mayor, Mamdani rescinded the orders of his predecessor, Eric Adams, including Executive Order 61, which provided more NYPD protection to synagogues in the city and removed the definition of anti-Semitism adopted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

He also rejected Adams’s boycott of Israel.

“On his first day as Mayor of New York City, Mamdani shows his true face: He rejects the IHRA’s definition of antisemitism and removes restrictions on boycotting Israel,” Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in the X post.

Schumer’s office did not respond to Fox News Digital’s multiple requests for comment on whether she supports Mamdani’s decisions or what message New York City’s Jewish communities should take from them.

Schumer has previously shied away from taking any position on Mamdani after it became clear that the Socialist candidate would be the Democratic nominee for mayor.

“We’re continuing to talk,” Schumer said each time he was asked if he would extend the approval.

His silence in his support continued when Mamdani refused to criticize the use of the phrase “globalize the intifada,” a phrase used by critics of Israel to promote the removal of the Jewish state. At the time, Mamdani’s stance on the speech drew criticism and shock from pro-Israel advocates.

Now that Mamdani is in office, Israel’s allies believe that the new mayor’s stance may prove dangerous.

The Consul General of Israel in New York, Ambassador Ofir Akunis, said the withdrawal “endangers the safety of Jewish communities in New York City and could lead to an increase in violent attacks throughout the city.”

After several antisemitic attacks in recent weeks, Schumer, the top Jewish official in the United States, said the country must loudly condemn anti-Semitism “on a regular basis.”

After the deadly Bondi Beach shooting in mid-December that left 15 victims dead at a Jewish community event, Schumer insisted that Jewish people were specifically targeted.

“The Jewish people are collectively demonized. The united humanity demands that we come together regardless of our race, religion, nationality and rebuke them with the power of that power,” Schumer said. “As I have warned many times, antisemitism is a global scourge.”
