After committing to political exile in Ireland after the re-election of President Donald Trump, Rosie O’Donnell quietly returned to the United States.

During an interview with Chris Cuomo on his new show, “SiriusXM’s Cuomo Mornings,” the 63-year-old actor revealed that he recently returned to the country to visit his family. The actress moved to Ireland with her teenage daughter in January 2025, shortly before President Trump’s second inauguration.

“I was home for two weeks recently, and I didn’t tell anybody,” Cuomo said. “I was just going to see my family. I wanted to see how difficult it would be for me to enter and leave the country. I wanted to feel what it was like. I wanted to hold my children again. And it had been a year since I was away from home.”

She then said she “wants to make sure it’s safe” for her and her daughter to come back this summer to be with family during her time off from school.

When speaking with Cuomo, he went on to discuss how America “feels like a very different country” to him than when he lived here because he never “watched the news” or kept up with “American culture television” while living in Ireland.

“I’ve been in a place where celebrity worship doesn’t exist,” he explained. “I went to a place where there is more balance in affairs. There is more balance in life. Not everyone is trying to get more, more, more. It’s a very different culture. And I felt the United States in a completely different way than before I left.”

O’Donnell said she has “no regrets at all about leaving” and feels she did “what I had to do to save myself, my baby and my sanity.”

“And I’m very glad I’m not among you there because the energy I felt when I was in the United States – if I can use the simplest word I can think of – was still terrifying,” he added. “There is a feeling that something is really wrong, and no one is doing anything about it.”

The bad blood between O’Donnell and President Trump goes back 20 years, when she criticized him while on “The View.” They continued to exchange words over the years, O’Donnell told Irish radio “Sunday with Miriam,” “He’s using me as a punching bag and a way to undermine his base.”

After announcing that he has moved to Ireland, the star shared that he is applying for Irish citizenship during an interview with the UK. The Daily Telegraph in October 2025.

“What good news for America!” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital about the news at the time.

President Trump had previously threatened to revoke O’Donnell’s US citizenship twice before by writing on Truth Social.

“Because Rosie O’Donnell is no good to our Great Country, I am seriously considering stripping her of her Citizenship,” he wrote in July 2025. “She is a menace to the People, and should stay in the Wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

He later renewed the threats in September 2025, writing, “He is not a Great American and, in my opinion, he cannot be!”

O’Donnell has pushed back against the president’s threats, using the Constitution as his defense against the President.

“He can’t do that because it’s against the Constitution, and even the Supreme Court didn’t give him the right to do that. … He’s not allowed to do that. The only way you’re allowed to take someone’s citizenship is if they sacrifice themselves, and I will never renounce my American citizenship,” said the “Now and Later” star. “I am a very proud citizen of the United States.

“I am also getting my citizenship here so that I can be a dual citizen in Ireland and the United States because I enjoy living here,” he added. “It is very peaceful. I love the politics of the country. I love the people and their hearts and their generosity. And it has been very good for my daughter. But I still want to maintain my citizenship in the United States. My children are there. I will be there to visit and go to see them. And I have the freedom to do that, as do all American citizens.”

Under the United States Constitution, the president does not have the power to revoke the citizenship of a person born in this country, which means that since O’Donnell was born in New York, his citizenship is protected by the 14th Amendment.
