Rachel Maddow draws parallels between Trump’s plans and Japan’s arrests

MS NOW host Rachel Maddow compared it to the Trump administration’s reported plans to build large detention centers for deportees from internment camps built for Japanese Americans during World War II.

During an appearance Thursday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Maddow was asked about her new podcast series “Burn Order,” which examines the US government’s massive 1940s internment of Japanese Americans following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

After giving the audience a brief glimpse of his new plan, the MS NOW host detailed how President Donald Trump’s reported plans to build institutions reminded him of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s past decision to incarcerate Japanese Americans.

“So in World War II, there was a racial declaration from our government that said, not only people who were from Japan and therefore Japanese citizens, but Americans who were born here – US citizens – if they were of Japanese descent, if they had Japanese ancestry, they were deported to the west coast of this country and more than 120,000 of them were imprisoned for years,” he explained.

“It’s something that was hard to believe, like, 10 years ago. When you look back – and now it’s not hard to believe, right?” Kimmel said.

Maddow cited a December report from The Washington Post that, according to internal ICE documents reviewed by the outlet, the Trump administration plans to build seven large deportation detention centers. The Post newspaper reported that these centers can house about 80,000 people in seven locations.

“The Washington Post recently reported on internal documents from the administration that say they want a series of temporary internment camps where they will hold people for weeks, then send them to about 10 large warehouse-style facilities where they will hold up to 10,000 people at a time. That’s the same structure they used during World War II in Japan.”

Maddow said the Trump administration is taking away citizens’ rights by “defining people as no longer protected by the US Constitution.”

“[The U.S. government] he just said that US citizenship no longer means anything. And I think that’s something that management is more than playing with now,” he said.
