Logan Paul’s Pokémon card sold for a whopping $16.4M

Logan Paul’s big bet on Pokémon seems to have paid off on Sunday night.

The WWE star and social media influencer broke a world record when he sold his 1998 Japanese Pikachu Illustrator, featured in a PSA gem mint 10, for more than $16.4 million. The only card of its kind to receive higher marks was PSA, which received a further 52. In comparison, Beckett received five identical cards, the highest of which was a 9th grade mint.

“Absolute madness,” said Paul describing the auction as it was happening in a video posted on his Instagram.

Paul bought the card a few years ago for what Guinness World Records said at the time was “the most expensive Pokémon trading card sold at private sale.” Paul will use this card as part of his WrestleMania 38 entry as he focuses on pro wrestling.

Goldin Auctions Co. acquired the auction rights to Paul’s episode. The company described the card as “an unimaginable piece of the Holy Grail.”

At the height of the Pokémon craze in November 1997, CoroCoro Comic announced a student contest called the “Pokémon Card Game Illust Artist Contest.” Students will be challenged to draw their own Pokémon card and submit it to the magazine. The winners of the competition will receive 20 cards with their image on them. Another 20 contestants received a “Award of Excellence” where they received a copy of the Pikachu Illustrator card.

“The current hobby agreement is that 41 copies of this card have been officially awarded and circulated, with this Logan Paul-backed piece being the largest among them,” Goldin’s description reads. “The card comes in a custom wooden presentation box with Paul’s Maverick logo and a plaque that reads ‘Pokémon / Pikachu Illustrator / PSA 10 / 1 of 1.’

“Due to the scarcity, great value, and pedigree of this Pikachu Illustrator, this is one of the most important public offerings of a Pokémon card in the history of the hobby and a potentially once-in-a-lifetime sale.”

AJ Scaramucci, son of financier and former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, bought the card.

“Goodbye my friend,” Paul wrote on Instagram before the auction began. “What a privilege it has been to own the greatest collection in the world.”

The item is now considered the most expensive trading card in the world.
