Google was modestly ‘attacked’ by AI

Sergey Brin, the founder of Google, admitted that Google was “definitely attacked as” by destroying AI and failing to accelerate the opportunity after releasing the modern era of AI.

Google is afraid. Google didn’t do it well enough and failed to scale quickly enough behind the transformer paper, Brin said. Also:

  • Google is “too scared to bring it to people” because chatbots can say dumb things. “
  • “Open the Openai Ran with it,” which was a good understanding. “

Full scale. Brin said:

  • “I think we somehow went too far to call and rescue and we took it seriously to bring the Transformer Pheel. And he really didn’t do it dumb. Our people loved Ilya [Sutskever] who went there to do that. But I think he still benefits from that long history. “

Yes, but. Google is still benefiting from years of AI research and mastering many powerful technologies, Brin said. That includes deep learning algorithms, years of neural network research and development, data center capacity, and semiconductors.

Why We Care. Brin’s comments help explain why Google’s AI-driven search changes have felt superficial and inconsistent. After years of skepticism about deploying Imperfect AI, now Google is moving fast (maybe too fast?). The volatility we see in Google Search is the harm associated with this approach.

Where is the AI? Brin describes today’s AI race as hyper-competitive and fast-moving: “If you skip AI news for one month, you’re behind.” When asked where AI is going, he said:

  • “I think we just don’t know. Is there an intellectual ceiling? I think beyond the question you raised, is it possible that there is someone who can’t do that?

One thing. Brin said he often uses the Gemini sitting in the car for back-and-forth conversations. The community kind of runs a “classic model,” Brin said, adding that “A better way” is coming in a few weeks.

Video. Brin’s remarks came at a Stanford event marking the school’s 100th anniversary. He discussed the origins of Google, its innovation culture, and current AI. Here is the full video.
