As the Trump administration ramps up enforcement of illegal immigration and cuts welfare fraud, the radical left is ramping up its tactics in a calculated effort to create martyrs.
We have seen this before, but the fervor of today’s ideology, supported by deep donors and outside influences, makes it even more dangerous. From blocking ICE operations to protecting large-scale fraud programs in states like Minnesota, Illinois, California, and New York, the left isn’t just resisting—it’s wreaking havoc on the cause of widespread unrest.
Signs are everywhere. In recent days, we’ve seen governors and mayors willing to do nothing openly defy government authority, fueling violent rhetoric after Rachel Good was shot and killed in Minneapolis after allegedly trying to disperse a law enforcement agent. This promotion of elected officials inevitably increases the threat of violence against ICE agents. This is a calculated strategy.
Like the New York Post reportGood was called an “ICE Watch activist”, a friend called him “a hero.” Which is to say, Good was on a law enforcement mission to interrupt and – luckily – was caught doing it.

But Trump and the law enforcement must not back down; they have to be clever and master instigators with quick strategies.
Elected officials on the left are making noise not just to raise money and avoid primary challenges from their more extreme sides, but to stir up conflicts that could produce martyrs. Martyrs, as history shows, are powerful agents of political violence, as demonstrated by the death of George Floyd in 2020 in Minneapolis. They are rallying the base and demonizing their opponents — with two main strategic goals to pressure the administration to back down while costing Republicans during the 2026 midterms and the 2028 presidential race.
Take the ongoing fight against welfare fraud. In Minnesota, the Feeding Our Future scandal revealed a staggering $250 million in stolen federal funds intended for child nutrition during the pandemic. Somali immigrants, some with ties to dubious non-profit organizations, have invested money overseas, including, apparently, in terrorist groups. But when federal investigators dug deeper, left-wing activists and politicians cried foul, calling it racial persecution. This is not isolated.

In Illinois, the audit revealed billions in improper Medicaid payments, often linked to unverified immigration. California’s Medi-Cal program is a black hole of fraud, estimated to be more than $20 billion a year, fueled by sanctuary policies that protect illegal immigrants. New York’s welfare system is in shambles, with overpayments and little oversight.
The left wants these questions stopped – not because they are baseless, but because exposing the rot undermines their narrative of open borders and unlimited rights.
But why are martyrs encouraged? From a deep understanding of revolutionary psychology. Today’s revolutionaries are not the opportunistic looters of past riots; they are run by ideological, often professional editors funded by left-wing billionaires and overseas sources, including China. Beijing is interested in sowing chaos here – weakening America internally while advancing its global ambitions. These groups know that another high-profile death in clashes with ICE would create outrage across the country, fueled by a sympathetic media.

This brings me to my own reflection from my time in uniform. In 1992, as a young intelligence officer, I was assigned with the California National Guard to quell the Los Angeles riots after the King Rodney verdict. For days the gangs and robbers grew bolder, night after night. False rumors spread like wildfire: that we Guards had no weapons or were forbidden to use our weapons. It strengthened the courage of the gangs. Leftist activists were also there, distributing flyers and organizing, trying to spark a full revolution. But their raw material was thin – many opportunistic criminals who did not like to die for a cause.
Then came the turning point. One night, a man tried to escape the security checkpoint. Defending themselves, the soldiers opened fire and he died. The next day, the roads changed. Gangs and gangs just behaved at their best. These rumors were proven to be false.
Compare that to today. In 1992, the protesters failed because the protesters were not ideologues willing to become martyrs. Now, the motivation is different.
Protests against President Donald Trump and ICE are organized by groups like Antifa and pro-Palestinian networks, steeped in Marxist ideology and heavily funded. They desire a martyr to further their narrative of “fascist” oppression.

Just look at the historical examples. During the secession crisis of 1860-61, after Virginia seceded, federal troops occupied Alexandria. Col. Elmer Ellsworth, a friend of President Abraham Lincoln, was shot and killed while removing the Confederate flag from a hotel. The owner of the hotel, James Jackson, was killed seconds later. In an instant, the Union and Confederacy had their first martyrs, fueling a conflict that killed more than 620,000 people during four years of bloody conflict.
We cannot let history repeat itself. The leftist strategy relies on predictable deployments that allow time for the instigators to gather, film and escalate. Trump and ICE must adapt to try to prevent more shootings. They can do this by changing jobs quickly, using intelligence to avoid gatherings and using non-lethal tools where possible. They should use resources in hot spots like Minnesota’s Somali communities or California cities, but do it unexpectedly. They should contact the government officials who are willing to pass the nullifications. And they must disclose the means of funding – trace the money from the billionaire foundations and Chinese-linked organizations that are fueling this chaos.

Backsliding will give the left a victory, embolden it to continue to defy and destroy the law. Instead, spending wisely will drain the swamp of fraud, secure our borders, and deny radicals their revered martyrs. America has faced serious threats. Successful resolution of the day.
Trump must move forward — decisively, but wisely — for America’s future.
