Newsom predicts that Trump will be ‘crushed’ in the upcoming midterm elections

California Governor Gavin Newsom mocked President Donald Trump during an appearance on Tuesday night, predicting that the November election will destroy the Republican Party because of Trump.
On “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” host Jimmy Kimmel said Democratic leaders were not fighting hard enough against Trump and pointed to Newsom’s push for Proposition 50 as an example of the aggressive response Democratic voters want to see.
Newsom, who is likely to run for president in 2028, said Democrats must change tactics against what he called a “historically unpopular” president and predicted Trump would drag down GOP candidates in the midterms.

“Trump is a historic president — he’s historically unpopular,” Newsom said. “He’ll be crushed, shelled, in no time. He’s toast. And he knows it.”
“Gavin Newsom should spend less time doing late-night TV interviews and more time fixing the disaster he created in California,” RNC National Press Secretary Kiersten Pels told Fox News Digital. “While Newsom trades humor with Hollywood elites, President Trump brings power abroad and consequences to Americans at home. If Democrats want the midterms to be a Gavin Newsom-style policy poll, Republicans are embracing that fight.”
The White House did not immediately return Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
Newsom made a similarly bold election prediction in an interview with MS NOW host Jen Psaki last week.
“The presidency as we know it will end in November when we get the gavel and Speaker Jeffries is the next speaker – as long as we stay vigilant,” he said during an interview in Feb. 25.

“Why did he call out Greg Abbott again, saying he is ‘entitled’ to five seats within a decade of reappointment?” Newsom asked during a Tuesday appearance on Kimmel, referring to a Trump-backed campaign to redraw the Texas congressional map to help Republicans pick up to five House seats.
Newsom said California Democrats responded by moving to redraw congressional boundaries with Proposition 50. The ballot measure, passed by voters in November, would flip five Republican-held House seats to Democrats during the midterms.
“Instead, we decided to redraw the lines, and, in a 90-day period, we raised $120 million, and we kicked his a– in November and redrew the lines,” he quipped.
Newsom cautioned against exaggerating the allegations, citing a protest at the Capitol on January 6 and warning of more efforts to shape election rules by the administration.
“This is not hyperbolic. You saw what happened on January 6, he tried to destroy the country, he lit democracy on fire, he called 11-12,000 votes in Fulton County. That is exactly what he is doing in the rest of the United States,” said the governor.
“Not as much as it has to do with redistricting, trying to decentralize elections, trying to take those ballot names and purge voters, decide who can vote, who can’t,” Newsom said. “Ask the people of Fulton County what to do. What happened to the eyes.”

Newsom’s warning came as he promoted his new book, “The Fast Guy,” fueling more speculation about 2028.
Newsom has acknowledged that he is mulling a presidential bid, telling CBS News last year that he would “consider” the race after the 2026 midterms and that he would “be lying” if he said otherwise.
