A Minnesota taxpayer-funded school moved classes online this week to address security concerns, while a community organization advised illegal immigrants to stay home amid a reported US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation and warned of widespread fear and disruption in the local Myanmar community.

Sejong Academy, a public charter school in St. Paul, announced it will move to online learning for the rest of the week after citing concerns for the “safety and well-being” of its school community, according to a notice posted on its website.

“Sejong Academy will continue online learning for the rest of the week (January 14 and 15),” the school’s website reads. “We appreciate your continued support and cooperation as we prioritize the safety and well-being of our school community.”

The school said students will attend classes remotely on Wednesday and Thursday before a scheduled day off on Friday to improve staff. The announcement did not specify the nature of the security concerns that led to the decision.

The change comes as Urban Village, a Minnesota-based community organization, released a video and posted statements on Instagram talking about immigration enforcement and urging illegal immigrants to stay home.

In the video, an Urban Village representative said the organization was passing on urgent information “about ICE,” and another speaker advised people without a green card or proof of citizenship to stay home and avoid opening their doors to strangers.

The video also talked about schools offering online learning options for families concerned about sending children to school.

In another Instagram post, Urban Village said members of Minnesota’s Myanmar diaspora were detained by ICE and US Border Patrol and transferred to out-of-state detention facilities.

The agency said some inmates are being forced to sign documents that waive legal rights and alleged law enforcement may have violated policies or laws, citing information obtained from a government official.

Urban Village said it advises non-citizens and green card holders to stay at home, avoid driving and limit contact amid what it described as law enforcement, adding that this guideline has caused parents to miss work, medical appointments and children to miss school and activities.

Sejong Academy did not refer to immigration enforcement or ICE in its online learning announcement, and it is unclear whether the school has merged with Urban Village or adjusted operations in response to the agency’s directive.
