Melania Trump calls husband a ‘mixer’ in FOX Business interview

First lady Melania Trump tells FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo that she encouraged President Trump to bring the country together despite deep divisions.
First lady Melania Trump has long guarded her privacy, as her husband has the most scrutinized office in the world.
During an interview with FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo before the premiere of Jan. 30 of her new documentary, titled “Melania,” the first lady revealed that she agreed to be filmed during the inauguration — but only on her terms.
“Everyone knows, I’m here [a] a very independent and selective person,” he said on “Mornings with Maria” Thursday.

During the interview, Bartiromo pointed to a moment in the film where Melania implores the president to do one thing at a time of great political division. Asked what this advice looks like when it works, the first lady said that the two talk freely about the issues facing the country.
“Well, I advise him and, you know, we talk about that, and we saw that the country is divided,” he said. “And it’s very difficult no matter what you say. They don’t like to listen and, what’s happening in our country now, I feel like there’s a lot of backlash and I hope it stops.”

When asked how the president could bring Americans together, the first lady described him as someone who was already working toward that goal, citing public safety and border enforcement as his top priorities.
“I think he’s doing a great job. He’s had a lot of success. And he’s an integrator,” he said.

The first lady added that public safety is central to that vision, stressing the importance of Americans feeling safe in their communities.
“He would like to have a country where all people can walk on the street and not be abused or killed or women raped,” he said. “A few years ago, many criminals came to the border, and he closed the border now, for a while he has returned, and we need to take care of our citizens.”

Senior special adviser to First Lady Melania Trump, Marc Beckman, discusses Amazon’s new documentary and the impetus behind the first lady’s growing public profile on ‘Mornings with Maria.’
“I can’t. I have work to do. I’m not in front of the TV. I’m working,” she said. “You go to different places. You need to do… what you called… you can’t watch all the time.”
Trump’s comments provide an unusual perspective on a first lady who prefers to work quietly behind the scenes, leading the case rather than being seen.
“It’s important to say… if you’re honest with yourself… listen to yourself… speak when it’s important and don’t play for the cameras… that’s the best,” she said.
