How Amazon Works and Keep It Working

Amazon Subscribe & Save is very straightforward. Here’s how to take advantage:

  1. Sign in to your Amazon account.
  2. Search for items that you use regularly (think cleaning supplies, staple foods, personal care items, pet food, vitamins, diapers, etc.).
  3. When you are ready to purchase an item, click the “register” button instead of the “add to cart” button.

(If you don’t see this button click the circle next to “Subscribe & Save” and it will expand to have a “Subscribe” button that you can click.)

Getting the Best of Amazon Sign Up and Save Deals

Not all Sign Up & Save deals are created equal. Here’s how to find the best:

1. Search for Bulk Packs and Bulk Items

Generally, the bigger the package, the better the savings. If it makes sense, choose multiple packs of items like shampoo, dish soap, mac and cheese, or trash bags. If it’s something we use regularly and it’s a best seller, I’ll stock it up!

2. View monthly promotions

Amazon often runs special promotions on groceries and household essentials. This is on top of your Sign Up & Save discount, so you double the savings. Always check this before adding something to your cart.

3. Browse Best Sellers & “Today’s Deals”

Some of the best deals are hidden in the bestseller lists and “today’s deals”. Search for household items or pantry staples, and you may find Save & Save options that are cheaper than buying one.

Amazon Subscribe and Save: What if the Price Changes?

One of the biggest questions I get is, What happens if the price of my Subscribe & Save items changes?? Here’s what you need to know…

For any new subscription you sign up for, you lock in the price of your first delivery when you first sign up. For future deliveries, however, Amazon unfortunately doesn’t lock in the price until your delivery is ready, which means the price can change slightly between your first and subsequent deliveries.

That means if the price goes up just before your next shipment, you may end up paying more than you planned. But there are a few tips on what to do if the Amazon Subscribe & Save price changes:

  • Monitor your subscription prices – Amazon sends you an email a few days before shipping, so keep checking that email to make sure the price hasn’t gone up. (I put a date on my monthly calendar to check Subscribe and Save my stuff and make sure I like what’s going to be shipped, move stuff, cancel what I don’t need, etc.)
  • Use a price tracker – Websites like CamelCamelCamel can alert you when the price drops, so you can decide if you want to continue, cancel, or pause the subscription.
  • Pause or adjust as needed — If the price goes up and you don’t need that item right away, you can cancel or skip that month at no cost.

Managing and modifying your Amazon subscription

One of the reasons I love Amazon Subscribe & Save is how flexible it is. You can:

  • Skip Delivery — If you don’t need something for a month, just hit skip. You will not lose your subscription or your discount.

  • Change Frequency — If you need toilet paper every two months instead of every month, you can change it with just a few clicks.
  • Cancel Anytime – There is no penalty for stopping your subscription. You are not confined to anything. (Actually, I often subscribe to an item for a discount and immediately cancel the subscription after it ships!)

How to Cancel Your Subscription and Save on Amazon

How to cancel a subscription and save: To do this, just understand Register and Save Items to your Amazon account. Everything is organized with just a few clicks. Simply go to Subscriptions > Edit (for the subscription you want to cancel) > Cancel Subscription.

Potentially unorganized subscriptions & Save

While Amazon Subscribe & Save is awesome, there are a few things you should be aware of:

  • Price Fluctuations — Prices are not locked, so it’s good to check them out.
  • Overselling – It’s easy to end up with more than you need. I suggest setting reminders to check your inventory before each delivery.
  • Out-of-Stock Issues – From time to time, Amazon runs out of subscriptions. If this happens, your order may be delayed, so always keep backups in case it’s important.
