Call me crazy, but I loved President Trump’s State of the Union address.
Yes, it was long – the longest in at least 60 years – but it was also fun. There was hope, hope and hope for America’s future. Right off the bat, on Tuesday night, Trump introduced the US men’s hockey team, and while they didn’t lead the team in the national anthem (my secret hope), they showed off their gold medals to thunderous applause and chants of “USA! USA!” That sets a celebratory and triumphant tone for the evening.
Trump did not appear to be a president under siege, struggling with approval ratings; far from it. He was at a high level; he was liberal, sometimes funny, and rightly incredulous about the pettiness and stupidity of his Democratic opponents. He described the Supreme Court’s decision declaring his tax rates illegal as “disappointing” and “unfortunate,” but then continued, talking about the importance of cost leveling for US companies and attracting billions of dollars of investment to the United States.
He also filled the gallery with a crowd of empathetic and admirable people whose lives and experiences not only illustrated the policies he highlighted but also inspired the audience.
Who can fail to applaud the children who survived the grievous injuries, or the pilot who was injured during the ousting of the illegal president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, who managed to do the job and was awarded the Medal of Honor? Or a National Guardsman shot in the head who recovers from all the problems? These stories are heart-warming and embody so much that is unique about the United States – the courage, dedication and patriotism that characterizes so many heroes.

Large numbers of undocumented immigrants have poured into cities like New York, causing chaos, crime and a budget headache as the public has had to pay for immigrants who receive taxpayer-funded health care, education and housing. Those problems persist, despite Trump’s efforts to deport the criminals who make our cities unsafe. In his speech, he asked Congress to abolish sanctuary cities. It won’t happen, but it should.
Trump ran to close the border; today it is more secure than ever. As he reminded voters, if the Democrats return to power, they will reverse his efforts.
As usual, Trump wrote his best songs. He celebrated “One Big Good Bill,” which he said contained the biggest tax cuts in US history, including reduced taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security. (He introduced a couple from Pennsylvania who owe more than $5,000 a year on the bill.) Trump also praised his efforts to lower prescription drug prices, make IVF more accessible — and sympathetically introduce a young woman trying to become a mother — and establish price transparency in health care.

He applauded “Trump Accounts” for young children that he said could help them get a head start in life, calling out computer inventor Michael Dell and his wife, Susan, for putting more than $6 billion into the program.
He also talked about his plan to make technology companies that operate data centers pay more for the electricity they need. Electricity prices have risen across the country, thanks in large part to what he described as reckless energy policies put in place by climate-minded Democrats. Trump is trying to fix that.
Another plan to increase affordability is his recent decision to bar large Wall Street financial firms from buying homes. In the end, this can help, as it will lower the loan amount. Such measures are designed to reduce the cost of living, which is likely to play a major role in the midterm elections.
The president and his team are also focused on eliminating social welfare fraud which he said is rampant. Trump said ending the theft of taxpayer dollars would end the deficit. It won’t, but it can really help. Even Joe Biden’s Office of Government Accountability has said that the country loses hundreds of billions of dollars every year due to fraud and theft; the Biden White House ignored the problem, but the Trump White House is fixing it.

The theft of billions of dollars in welfare payments in Minnesota by mostly Somali criminals has been a serious political case for Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and other state officials who, perhaps, ignored the problem. Trump nominated Vice President JD Vance to lead the fraud investigation; you can be sure that Democrat-held states like California and New York will be on the way.
It was a good night for the president; It was a bad night for Democrats. More than 70 Democrats embarrassingly boycotted the speech, making its presence less impactful.

President Trump has called out Democrats more than once, in some cases, for opposing popular items like tax cuts and voter ID laws. He also criticized them for supporting unpopular methods such as reassignment of children’s gender without parental consent. When he introduced the family whose daughter met with that misfortune, he raised his hand towards the Democrats, saying, “These people are crazy.” Many would agree.
President Trump got this message: You need to make life easier. Now he has to follow. After Tuesday night, the world knows he’s working on it.
