Lindsey Vonn has been released from prison, as she prepares to leave Italy after the Winter Olympics crash, officials say.

Lindsey Vonn is preparing to return to the United States, a U.S. Ski Team official told The Associated Press on Sunday, adding that the athlete is preparing to fly back home for more post-treatment. finishing in the women’s Olympic downhill competition last weekend.
An official at Ca’ Foncello Hospital in Treviso, Italy, where the American star skier has been treated since her accident, told CBS News on Monday that Vonn has been released from the hospital, but there was no immediate confirmation from her team about her plans to fly home.
Sophie Goldschmidt, president and CEO of the US Ski and Snowboard Association, told the AP over the weekend that the team’s medical staff has been coordinating Vonn’s recovery since the accident and the helicopter evacuation at the Milan Cortina Games, and will try to escort her home. Vonn he had many surgeries in Italy to repair a complex tibia fracture in his left leg.
“We’re working on all of that right now,” Goldschmidt said. “We have a great team helping him and he will be returning to the US for more surgery.”
Spectators tuned in to see Vonn trying to win a medal when he was 41 years old with a torn ACL in his left knee and a partial titanium replacement in his right knee was shocked when the American standout was connected to a gate 13 seconds into a run – leading to a spin, wind-induced crash that sent him careening down the Dolomite mountain.
“The impact, the silence, everybody was in shock. And you could tell it was a really bad injury,” said Goldschmidt, who was there for the fall. “There is a lot of risk involved in doing all kinds of Alpine sports but it gives a great appreciation of how superhuman these athletes are.
“I mean, putting your body on the line, going at those speeds, the body. Sometimes, actually in broadcasting, it’s really hard to cross that,” Goldschmidt added. “Sometimes an accident brings fans in and it’s attractive. Obviously we hope we don’t have an injury like that but unfortunately it’s part of our games.”

Vonn said he expects to have another operation on the leg injury Saturday in Italy, and likely one more after he returns to the US.
He has already undergone at least three surgeries since the crash. But Vonn has no regrets about skiing at the 2026 Olympics.
“Thinking about my risk, I didn’t stop at the starting gate without knowing the consequences,” Vonn said in an Instagram post late Saturday. “I knew what I was doing. I chose to take the risk. Every skier in that first gate took the same risk. Because even if you are the strongest person in the world, the mountain always holds the cards.
“But because I was good, that didn’t guarantee me anything. Nothing is guaranteed in life. That’s the game of chasing your dreams, you might fail but if you don’t try you never know,” added Vonn.
Goldschmidt visited Vonn twice in the hospital and said, “She’s not in pain. She’s in stable condition.”
“He took an aggressive line and he was on the inside and it was inches away from what could have been a huge difference,” Goldschmidt said. “But what he has done for our sports and sports in general, being a good example, has reached another level. You learn more about people in these difficult times than when they win.”
