Johnny Carson’s former home in Los Angeles is officially on the market.
A 9,052-square-foot home in Bel Air is for sale for $40 million in partnership with listing agents David Kramer and Andrew Buss of Compass.
Originally built in 1950, the six-bedroom, 11-bathroom home sits on a 1.5-acre lot, which also has a two-story detached guest house.
In the main house, guests will find a library, wine cellar and home office, in addition to two large garages, a kitchen with a balcony and a spacious master bedroom with walk-in closet and two ensuite bathrooms.

Also available in the area is a multi-car court, a separate fountain with tiers, a circular swimming pool, with a sun deck and a cabana.
A controlled tennis court with its own covered seating area can also be found on the grounds, as well as an indoor area with a kitchen and powder room.

Carson bought the house in the 1970s and lived there with his third wife, Joanna, until they divorced in 1985, after which Carson stayed in his Malibu home, which went on the market for $110 million last year. All proceeds from the sale will go to three charities: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the David Geffen Foundation, and SHARE, according to Robb’s report.
The latest book, “Love Johnny Carson,” written by Carson star Mark Malkoff, and David Ritz, chronicles the life and career of the former “Tonight Show” host, with interviews from those who knew him best. Among other things, Malkoff wrote about how years on “Saturday Night Live” played a role in Carson’s decision to retire from hosting.

“Leno, a guest that night, heard Johnny in the hallway saying, ‘If they’re going to make fun of me, it’s time to go,'” Malkoff wrote about the May 1991 taping after Carson learned that “SNL” was planning to do another sketch of him.

According to the book, shortly after Carson was heard making this statement, “SNL” aired the famous “Carsenio” sketch, and two days later, he announced that he was stepping down and that his last show would be in May 1992.

After years of “SNL” running sketches starring Carson, many of which included Dana Carvey portraying the talk show host, Carson began shooting down those who spent years laughing at his expense, during the final months of his show.
The book says: “But Johnny ended up laughing. “At his press conference on May 20, two days before his last show, he said, ‘We’ve been with this network for thirty years, and this fall – I saw [new] schedule, and they came up with a really cool, innovative plan. They’re going to try a Saturday Night Live type of comedy.’

Carson’s last show aired on May 22, 1992. Malkoff writes that in his last interview, Carson shared that “I’m one of the luckiest people in the world” and that he “enjoyed every minute” of his tenure on the show.
“I want to thank the gentleman who shared the stage with me for thirty years, Mr. Ed McMahon; Mr. Doc Severinsen,” he said in the square. “And the people who are looking at you – I can only tell you that it has been an honor and a privilege to enter your homes all these years … I bid you a good night from the bottom of my heart.”
