DR MARC SIEGEL: Real medical miracles, and those that don’t

NEWNow you can listen to Fox News articles!

Is what you are experiencing truly a medical miracle, or is medical technology advancing at the right pace to step in and save your life, or the life of someone really important to you?

Or does it really matter which one it is? To me, medicine and advancing technology are the “hands of God,” so the coincidence of the miraculous recovery that occurs as technology emerges is the presence of God.

I remember when my cousin Howard, a retired doctor, was in the hospital with inflammable lymphoma back in 2002, and he responded well to a chemotherapy regimen called CHOP that had been used to successfully treat many lymphomas since the 1960s.

Finally, his hematologist told me, and Howard, that even though he was now in remission, he felt that the chances of a relapse within the next 15 years were close to 100 percent. But, then he said there was a new drug we could try that had just come out, a targeted monoclonal antibody that was showing increasing promise against lymphoma.

Howard got it and has never had a recurrence, and a combination treatment is now standard, known as RCHOP.

In 1995, Melvin Mann, was a 37-year-old army officer when he was diagnosed with a deadly blood cancer, chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). He lost weight, became very tired and was in trouble when, three years later, he was among the first to receive a new tyrosine kinase inhibitor in a clinical trial (CML patients make too much of the enzyme tyrosine kinase, which leads to an overproduction of white blood cells). Soon his strength returned, and he gained weight and within a year, he was running long distances.

This is not to say that all new and emerging treatments are automatic miracle cures. We must be very wary of snake oil sellers. As Dr. Scott Rodeo, the New York Giants’ head team doctor, recently pointed out, “rejuvenating drugs aren’t there yet. The science is promising, but marketing is way ahead.”

To me, medicine and advancing technology are the “hands of God,” so the coincidence of the miraculous recovery that occurs as technology emerges is the presence of God.

He wrote that stem cell treatments promoted in offshore clinics in Panama, Colombia and other countries are not certified and not regulated, “which makes it impossible for me, or any doctor, to give objective medical advice about them.”

Rodeo also warned of potentially fatal complications including blindness, tumor formation and severe infection. And that efficiency is “the best symptom fixer.”

Speaking of snake oil salesmen promoting delusions that make people seek medical miracles, in Kenya there are real miracle workers who claim to cure deadly diseases with magical hand waves. These are preachers, prophets and sorcerers who claim to be able to heal with witchcraft. And there are even medical experts in Africa who say magic works. The problem has become so widespread that the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council has expressed concern about public health safety and ethics related to these claims.

Medical miracles are real, we experience them every day, as I wrote in my book, “The Miracles Among Us.” These miracles have many meanings and are unexpected and often overlooked. They build us up and give us hope for the new year.

At the same time, we need to be wary of those who give us free miracles to make money or control us.
