Vermont Democratic Sen. Peter Welch praised Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., on Friday, saying he would definitely be confirmed as the new DHS Secretary for being a “respectable” person.
President Donald Trump recently nominated Mullin for the top job at the Department of Homeland Security in a top staff pick. CNN host Kasie Hunt asked Welch if she would consider supporting Mullin’s nomination for the role.
“Yes, he will be confirmed. The question is whether there is bipartisan support for him,” Welch replied. “Markwayne Mullin is talented, and he’s honest. So those are two good things that Kristi Noem didn’t have.”

He continued, “This is going to give us an opportunity to have a real conversation about what’s going on with the Department of Homeland Security. Number one, what we saw with that violence in Minneapolis will never happen again. You had Kristi Noem, who actually called the two people who were killed, domestic terrorists. Are we going to continue raiding churches, farms, threatening elections in places of disruption?
Welch then suggested, “We’re going to have an opportunity to talk to Sen. Mullin and get to the heart of some of these questions that I think concern a lot of Republicans and Democrats.”
“And you think it’s likely to be bipartisan?” Hunt asked. “I mean, I think Sen. Fetterman of Pennsylvania, a Democrat, has demonstrated that. Besides, do you get the sense that there might be a willingness within your caucus to override that?”

“Well done Markwayne – he’s respected. He’s honest and competent,” Welch responded, noting his concern for the future and his opposition to recent DHS policies such as undercover agents and workplace raids. “So, I think Markwayne’s case will talk more about policy and what he will give us as we look forward, rather than his qualities, because people respect Markwayne.”
