Amazon layoffs have reportedly hit hundreds of New York workers

The latest wave of Amazon layoffs has reportedly hit New York, with hundreds of workers losing their jobs.

About 135 corporate employees at Amazon’s office at 1440 Broadway in Manhattan were laid off in January, according to the New York Post, citing a filing with the New York State Department of Labor.

More than 100 other New York-based employees have also been let go, the source said, citing a source who said more documents are expected to be filed in government records in the coming weeks.

The cuts are part of Amazon’s restructuring efforts, the New York Post reports.

Last month, Amazon announced plans to eliminate about 16,000 roles across the company as part of an organizational overhaul aimed at “reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing leadership,” while continuing to invest heavily in areas such as artificial intelligence.

“Some of you may be asking if this is the start of a new rhythm — where we announce broad layoffs every few months. That’s not our plan,” HR chief Beth Galetti said at the time.

The company also cut about 14,000 corporate positions in October during another restructuring. In total, the latest cuts bring Amazon’s job cuts to about 30,000.

While that number represents a fraction of Amazon’s 1.58 million global employees — most of whom work in warehouses and fulfillment centers — it’s about 10% of the company’s workforce, according to Reuters.

The layoffs mark the largest layoffs in Amazon’s 30-year history, surpassing the 27,000 job cuts between late 2022 and early 2023, Reuters reported.

“We will need a few people doing some of the jobs that are done today,” said Jassy last June. “… In the next few years, we expect that [AI] we will reduce the number of our corporate employees as we reap the benefits of using AI more throughout the company.”
