Actress Meryl Streep sounds the alarm on the SAVE Act, says women must ‘hear’

Actress Meryl Streep spoke out against the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act during an interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Wednesday, saying married women would have to “verify who they are.”
Colbert asked the actor at the end of their interview if there was anything he wanted to talk about or reveal.
“I hope the Save America Act, if that passes, all married women who change their names will have to go to the registrar to verify that they are. In other words, to your voter registrar,” she said. “This is what I understand. Otherwise, when you get to the polling place in November, you could be kicked out because your name doesn’t match your name on your birth certificate. So, everyone has to get – and this is a pain in the neck because you have to go but do it because, otherwise you will be turned away.”
She continued, “And I think women need to be heard, especially at this time.”

REPUBLICANS JOIN ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ FINANCIAL CLAUSES AGAINST TRUMP’S VOTER ID BILL
The GOP-backed SAVE Act — which requires proof of citizenship to vote — has met strong opposition from Democrats.
Democrats say the bill will lead to voter suppression and compare it to “Jim Crow 2.0.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., has made this comparison many times.
“Each state can have its own voter ID laws, and some have them and some don’t. But secondly, what they are proposing in this law called the SAVE Act is that like Jim Crow 2.0. They made it so difficult to get any kind of voter ID that over 20 million legal people, mostly poor people and people of color, would not be able to vote under this law. We will not let it pass the Senate. We’re fighting tooth and nail,” Schumer said during a CNN interview in February.
CHUCK SCHUMER UNDER FIRE AFTER CALLING VOTER ID ‘JIM CROW 2.0’
Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., when addressing public support for voter ID during an interview in February, said the SAVE Act would still be a deterrent to voting.
The Democrats’ argument is that the law will make it harder for American women to vote – especially married women whose last names are different from those on their birth certificates, which Streep pointed out during the Colbert interview.
Republicans countered the criticism of the Democratic Alliance.
“This is complete nonsense, and we specifically allow a provision to ensure that no one is left behind,” said Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, Fox News Digital previously reported.

“If a woman tries to register to vote with different names on her birth certificate and driver’s license,” said Roy. “We actually legislate that all you have to do is sign an affidavit under penalty of perjury saying, ‘I am that person. This is my birth certificate… and this is my driver’s license that shows my married name.’
The law, in addition to providing proof of citizenship, would authorize states to verify and remove noncitizens from voter rolls, expand information sharing with federal agencies, including DHS, to verify citizenship and create new criminal penalties for registering noncitizens to vote.
