Fans raise the Greenlandic flag to protest the US hockey win over Denmark

As Team USA returned from its men’s hockey win over Denmark at the Winter Olympics, two fans raised the Greenlandic flag in the stands to protest President Donald Trump’s plan to buy Greenland for the US.

The flag was raised with excitement after Denmark took an early lead. However, the US won the game 6-3.

Vita Kalniņa and her husband Alexander Kalniņš, fans of the Latvian hockey team living in Germany, raised a large Greenlandic flag during the warm-up and when the Danish team scored the opening goal of the first round match against the US, which ended up beating Denmark 6-3.

“We are Europeans, and I think as Europeans we should stick together,” Kalniņš told the Associated Press.

“The people of Greenland decide what will happen with Greenland, but, as it is now, Greenland is part of the Danish kingdom and, since Greenland is part of Denmark, like this, we support both countries against the US”

A Danish fan of the sport, Dennis Petersen, said, “It doesn’t matter what sport it is – whether it’s tennis, whether it’s bobsledding, whether it’s ice hockey, whether it’s soccer – it has nothing to do with politics. … They’re athletes, not politicians.”

An American fan of the sport, Rem de Rohan, said, “I think this is the time for people to put that down and compete with the world and have fun,” he said. “We like to focus on all the countries that have been here.”

Fans on social media had their own reactions to the display of the flag and the outcome of the match.

“Now that the USA is up 4-2 can we place a bet that if the USA wins the game, Denmark will drop Greenlandic flag?” one fan wrote in response to the flag.

One fan wrote,

“Team USA won, are we getting Greenlandic flag  now?”

Another fan similarly said, “How did that happen? we made it, we get greenland now.”

Some American conservative activists used the US victory as a basis for making viral jokes about annexing Greenland.

A US comeback victory looked uncertain early in the game.

After trailing 2-1 in the first half, the Americans cruised to a 6-3 victory over Denmark on Saturday in league play. Milan Cortina Olympic Games.

The Americans scored three unanswered goals to open the second half, with 4 Nations champion Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa Senators), Jack Eichel (Vegas Golden Knights) and Noah Hanifin (Vegas Golden Knights) finding the net.

Both sets of brothers on the team — Brady and Matthew Tkachuk and Jack and Quinn Hughes — each had a point in the contest. Fourteen players had the Americans score with a different scorer each time the light went on.

The Americans had 47 shots on goal compared to 21 for Denmark.

The US wraps up the first game on Sunday with game against Germany at 3:10 pm ET. The Americans will once again be heavy favorites, and a win will put them in the playoffs.

The Americans can also go straight to the exit stage by losing more time. With the loss of regulation, their fate will be decided by the match between Canada and France and the points difference with Slovakia, Finland and Sweden.

But as heavy favorites against a German team with only eight NHL players, the US may not need to worry.
