Argentina, the US signed a new trade deal backed by Trump to reduce tariffs

Argentina and the United States have signed a trade and investment agreement that will give the US preferential market access, reduce tariffs on a variety of goods and deepen cooperation in economic and national security issues, according to the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) and President Javier Milei.

The agreement, signed on Thursday, is designed to cut or eliminate tariff barriers and exemptions, facilitate the exchange of goods and services, modernize transport processes and encourage investment in strategic sectors including energy, precious minerals, infrastructure and technology, according to Argentina’s Presidential Office.

This agreement builds on the framework trade agreement that was first reached in Nov. 13 and was signed by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, USTR said.

Under the agreement, Argentina will reduce or eliminate tariffs on many US exports, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, chemicals, machinery, automobiles, information technology products and a wide range of US agricultural goods.

Argentina also agreed to accept US safety standards and regulations for imported goods, including standards for vehicles and medical devices, and to observe US Department of Agriculture (USDA) food safety standards for meat and poultry imports.

The agreement prevents Argentina from imposing obligations on cross-border data transfers and includes a commitment not to introduce a digital services tax directed at US technology companies, according to USTR.

The agricultural provisions include a commitment from Argentina to open its market for US poultry products within a year and to ease regulatory requirements for US exporters of beef and pork.

Argentina also agreed not to restrict US exporters’ use of certain cheese names — including asiago, feta and camembert — that the European Union labels geographical indications that are only found in producing regions.

The agreement calls for closer cooperation in enforcing export controls for dual-use materials that may have military applications, while addressing the integrity of Argentina’s telecommunications infrastructure, USTR said.

Although the document does not specifically mention China, the office of the US Trade Representative said that it will promote cooperation in the fight against unfair trade practices by third countries.

Argentina also committed to working with its provincial governments to facilitate investment by US companies in key mineral projects and to prioritize the United States as a trading partner for copper, lithium and other key minerals beyond what the USTR described as “market controlled economies or businesses.”

In a statement issued in Buenos Aires, Argentina’s presidential office said the agreement reflects the government’s determination to fully integrate the country into the global economy and move to an “open, competitive, and predictable economy that rewards investment, work and innovation.”

The agreement will be sent to Argentina’s National Congress for consideration, according to the presidency.

Gerer praised the growing relationship between the two governments.
