French police raided Elon Musk’s X Paris offices amid an algorithm investigation

French police raided X’s Paris offices on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the company’s use of algorithms and its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.

The investigation was carried out by the cybercrime unit of the Paris public prosecutor, who then called Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino to testify on April 20, according to Reuters.

French prosecutors opened the investigation in 2025 following a lawyer’s complaint that location-biased algorithms may have distorted the performance of an automated data processing system.

Authorities are now investigating the alleged abuse of the algorithm and the release of fraudulent data by X or the platform’s administrators, prosecutors said.

The investigation has since expanded to include Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Musk’s company xAI and integrated with the speaker, Reuters said.

The Information Commissioner’s Office, the Information Commissioner’s Office, said on Tuesday it had launched an official investigation into Grok regarding the processing of personal data and reports that the chatbot had been used to produce sexually explicit images, including of children.

UX continued to criticize the actions of the French authorities, accusing the prosecutors of violating international legal procedures.

The company said in a statement to X that the Paris public prosecutor’s office “was clearly trying to put pressure on X’s top management in the United States by targeting our French organization and employees, which is not the purpose of this investigation.”

UX added that prosecutors were ignoring established procedures for obtaining evidence “in accordance with international agreements” and the company’s right to self-defense.

Speaking about the raid, Musk said in a post to X: “This is a political attack.”

In another statement, Europol said it was supporting the French investigation with the help of the Cybercrime unit of the French Gendarmerie.

“The investigation concerns a series of criminal cases allegedly related to the operation and use of the platform, including the distribution of illegal content and other types of online criminal activity. Europol stands ready to continue to support the French authorities as the investigation continues,” it said.
