US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be present at Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California, next month, but the county sheriff has made it clear that the agency will not be returning.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Bob Jonsen said on Thursday that although the authorities are there for citizens and visitors who will come to the city to play a game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots, the department will not work to support ICE agents in any immigration enforcement activities.

“Therefore, I urge our coalition partners, if you are planning to do something in our community, please make it public and contact your local officials so that we can work as best we can,” said Jonsen in a press conference.

“That said, we’re not going to change our policies or regulations. We’re not going to work with or support ICE Immigration Enforcement, but I want to, and, remember, if you see us out there, we’re here to help you and we’ll be there. Don’t hesitate to contact someone in uniform as these events happen as they go and try to engage and make sure you stay safe.”

At the same time, Jonsen said local law enforcement will be there to keep residents safe.

“We’ll be here for you, side by side. So as you get off those trains, get off those buses, yes, you’re probably going to see someone in uniform. But if they’re not, if they’re wearing red and green or blue and black, trust me, they’re there for your protection. They’re there for your protection.

“If they are covered with masks and trying to hide who they are, then someone has not contacted us because we have made it clear to our officers, our employees must be open and work openly and participate in this community in the next few weeks and that is our goal every day. We have spent decades building this community, building that trust. I was able to give you a lot of information last year… it will happen and if it will happen and if it will happen but without that communication we will not know.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to ICE for comment.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary for Government Affairs Tricia McLaughlin Yoho told TMZ earlier this week that there will be agents on duty to enforce the law.

“DHS is committed to working with our local and state partners to ensure the Super Bowl is safe for everyone involved, as we do for all major sporting events, including the World Cup,” he said. “Our mission has not changed.”

DHS adviser Corey Lewandowski said in October that enforcement was “a directive from the president,” and would not be suspended for the Super Bowl.

“There is no place you can provide a safe haven for people who are in this country illegally,” Lewandowski said on “The Benny Show” podcast. “Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else. We’re going to find you and deport you. That’s the real situation.”
