‘That’s our land,’ Trump said as he vowed again to get Greenland – National

US President Donald Trump also vowed to get Greenland, calling the Danish territory “our territory” while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“We need it for national security and international security. This huge unprotected island is part of North America on the northern border of the Western Hemisphere,” Trump said.

“That’s our field.”

Trump said the US “never asked” for anything to bring back NATO.

“Maybe we won’t get anything unless I decide to use great power and force where we will be, to be honest, unstoppable,” he said.

“I don’t need to use force, I don’t want to use force, I won’t use force. The United States is asking for a place called Greenland.”

“You can agree, and we will appreciate it very much, or you can say no, we will remember,” he said.

The speech – broadcast live on this post – comes a day after world leaders and historic allies of the US rejected Trump’s threats to take over the island, and after Prime Minister Mark Carney gave a major foreign policy speech in the same place where he said “the old order is not coming back.”

On Saturday, Trump said he would impose a 10 percent import tax starting in February on goods from eight European countries because of opposition to the annexation of Greenland by the United States, which Trump did not decide to take by force and against the American needs of “national security.”

During a press conference at the White House on Tuesday, Trump was asked how far he would go to get Greenland.

“You will find out,” he said.

The move has drawn criticism from allies, including the European Union and Canada. European Council President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU’s response “will be firm, united and balanced.”

Carney says Canada is “strongly opposed” to tariffs on countries that oppose the US annexation of Greenland and that Canada’s commitment to the collective defense framework – Article 5 – of the NATO military alliance is “unwavering.”

“For Arctic sovereignty, we stand firmly with Greenland and Denmark and fully support their unique right to determine the future of Greenland. Our commitment to Article 5 of NATO is unwavering,” he said.

More to come.
