Gwyneth Paltrow has always known when to put her foot down.

The actress sat down with her former partner Ethan Hawke for Vanity Fair, and they talked in detail about their experience filming 1998’s “Great Expectations” — including a graphic sex scene she refused to do.

“Do you remember Alfonso telling you a love story?” Hawke asked, referring to the film’s director, Alfonso Cuarón.

Paltrow replied, “Oh my god,” explaining that Cuarón wanted to film a scene where her character receives oral sex from Hawke’s character.

“I was like, ‘Oh my god, my dad is going to have a heart attack,'” she recalled.

Hawke imitated Cuarón, saying, “The camera will go down your stomach, then it will go up to your breasts, then it will go into your face as you reach ecstasy. Then when you reach ecstasy, the light will explode like the sun!”

Paltrow laughed about the acting, and Hawke added, “And I remember looking at Gwyneth, and Gwyneth is like, ‘Alfonso, I’m not going to do that.’

“But you know, at the beginning of my first job, I thought to myself that my father and grandfather saw these kinds of things,” he said. “Like, it really bothered me.”

He added, “Now, I won’t care.”

Hawke praised her handling of the rejection at the time, recalling that she was firm but “not focused,” and Paltrow said, “I was probably a little too angry at the time.”

“I was definitely worried about it,” he commented.

In “Great Expectations,” a modern adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, Hawke starred as Finn, a painter who was fixated on Paltrow’s Estella. During their conversation, he revealed that he almost missed the chance to act because he was afraid that he didn’t look good for the actor.
