New York Times columnist Bret Stephens contradicted his media colleagues on Tuesday, telling readers that President Donald Trump’s war against Iran is “going better than you think” in a piece on Tuesday.
Stephens recalled the high oil prices the country faced in 2012, noting at the time that “the price of Brent crude closed the month at about $123 a barrel,” noting that it would be $175 a barrel today, and that the current price is “going around $100.”
“That should give some idea about the fear of war in the Middle East,” Stephens wrote. “Hearing the critics’ version of events, the unnecessary and unnecessary attack on Iran, launched at the behest of Israel, has become a foreign policy that has put the world economy at risk without a clear objective or end game.”

He chose Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who on Sunday told NBC’s Kristen Welker, “We have never seen this level of incompetence in the history of this country.”
“Really?” Stephen responded. The Times writer documented several conflicts starting with Operation Desert Storm in 1991, which destroyed dozens of American aircraft in a six-week period, and the current war with Iran has resulted in the destruction of four within four weeks. He mentioned how 23 soldiers were killed and 325 wounded during the 1989 invasion of Panama, and 13 killed and 230 wounded (he noted that most “returned to duty early”) in the current war.

Stephens also highlighted how President George W. Bush received little support from Arab nations when he launched the invasion of Iraq in 2003, while Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged Trump to continue the war against Iran, according to a report by Stephens’ Times colleagues.
“I’m critical of the Trump administration’s failure to plan, especially their unwillingness to make a strong public case for war and get more allies on our side before the campaign begins,” Stephens continued. “Nevertheless, if past generations could see how well this war has gone compared to those they were forced to fight at appalling cost, they would marvel at the comparative fortunes of their own generation. They would marvel, too, at our inability to appreciate the advantages we now have.”

The New York Times isn’t the only outlet to give Trump a surprise report card. An op-ed published last week by Al Jazeera praised the effectiveness of the military measures taken by the US and Israel.
“If you look at what has really happened to Iran’s main energy resources – its ballistic missiles, its nuclear infrastructure, its air. [defenses]its navy and its proxy command structure – the picture is not one of US failure. It is one of the systematic, phased destruction threats that previous administrations have allowed to grow for four decades,” wrote Muhanad Seloom, an assistant professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies.
