University of California, Riverside professor Brandon Robinson has argued that sexual labels such as “gay” or “lesbian” are “harmful to trans people” and calls for the complete elimination of gender identity.
While promoting the book “Trans Pleasure: On Gender Liberation and Sexual Freedom,” Robinson, a member of the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies, spoke to UC Riverside about gender identity on Friday.
Robinson, who uses their pronouns, explained the importance of going beyond “gender importance” from gender identity, which the professor said can be created by “ideas” of gender.

“If being ‘gay’ means being a man who is attracted to men, it is assumed that ‘man’ is a stable, natural category, where history shows that the definition of masculinity is constantly changing,” said Robinson. “Gender primacy also hurts trans people, who tend to blur those binary boundaries.”
Robinson listed traditional labels like “gay” or “lesbian” as ones that should be eliminated, asking readers to ask “why do we privilege sexuality and private parts above all other qualities” in our desires.

“I think the risk is worth it. While those communities are important, moving beyond those labels allows us to see people more accurately. It leads to a more complex — and biologically accurate — understanding of ourselves as human beings. It allows us to explore our desires beyond the labels that often confine us and bind us. And it allows us to explore our desires beyond the shame that often comes with many labels,” Robinson said.

Fox News Digital has reached out to UC Riverside for comment.
According to a University of California press release, Robinson’s book is the product of hundreds of Reddit conversations and 48 interviews with transgender women and “trans femmes” or “female-identifying trans people.”
“I made a flyer, which went through UCR’s Institutional Review Board, offering trans women $100 for a one-hour interview. I posted an ad on Twitter and sent it to LGBTQ organizations,” Robinson said. “In less than 12 hours, I got over 100 responses. I think a lot of trans women were excited to join because they had never been asked about this part of their lives before.”

From there, Robinson concluded that gender identity can implicitly emphasize gender as rigid, biological categories.

“Ownership limits us,” Robinson wrote. “And the fact that we continue to create new identities – such as femme, finsexual, sapiosexual, asexual, or pansexual – shows how these categories fail to capture the full complexity of sexuality, sexuality, and desire.”
