Dan Crenshaw voting record Four-term Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, lost his first Republican primary on Tuesday to Steve Toth, a state representative and businessman, following years of conflict between Crenshaw and the Republican Party’s MAGA group that questioned Crenshaw’s loyalty to Trump.
The 2nd Congressional District primary that ended on Tuesday with Toth defeating Crenshaw became a sharp line within the Republican Party. Crenshaw was not officially endorsed by President Donald Trump or Gov. of Texas Greg Abbott.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, endorsed Toth after he reportedly clashed with Crenshaw at the airport over whether the senator was working against the representative’s re-election.
Ahead of Tuesday’s primary, Toth cast himself as the most reliable person, comparing Crenshaw to “a version of Liz Cheney,” who, while in Congress, often found herself sparring with Trump before leaving public office.

Toth, a 2019 Texas State Representative and owner of a residential and commercial pool management company, received endorsements from the House Freedom Caucus, Turning Point USA, Sen. Cruz, Texas Right to Life, 21 Republican colleagues from the Texas state legislature and other high-profile local dignitaries.
Meanwhile, Crenshaw received an endorsement from Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, the leader of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., the National Border Patrol Council, and the National Rifle Association, among others. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise also told reporters before the first meeting that he “supports” Crenshaw, and that he “hopes he pulls it off.”
Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL who lost an eye in combat and currently sits on the powerful House intelligence committee, fought the label that he was an insufficiently loyal MAGA Republican before the primary.

“My relationship with Trump is good,” Crenshaw told the Houston Chronicle, which has also endorsed the incumbent congressman, before Tuesday’s primary. “I work closely with his management. I’m close with Pete Hegseth and John Ratcliffe and Kash Patel, because it’s all within my competence and [House] Intelligence Committee. We are working very closely with the White House. You’d have to ignore any of that to think I’m not ‘Trump’ enough. ”

In 2020, Crenshaw ran unopposed, then won nearly two-thirds of the vote in the 2022 primary, according to Ballotpedia. But, in 2024, according to the database, Crenshaw’s popularity has dropped significantly to about 60% in the beginning.
A few days before Tuesday’s caucus, reports surfaced that Crenshaw and Cruz got into an argument at the airport, with Crenshaw accusing Cruz of working with him in the House primary. According to the report, Cruz replied: “If I work against you, you will know.”
Days later, he dropped his endorsement deal with Toth, which was followed by a paid advertisement to get the word out.

Crenshaw had a huge fundraising advantage over his opponents, but he also faced redistricting changes in his district that pulled parts of Toth’s home state into the race.
Toth will face Democratic candidate and investment entrepreneur Shaun Finnie, who ran unopposed in the primary, during the November general election to become the next Representative of Texas’ 2nd District which includes parts of greater Houston and surrounding areas.
