Actress Susan Sarandon said she was blacklisted from Hollywood because of her calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“I was fired by my agency, especially for marching and talking about Gaza, for calling for an end to the violence,” Sarandon said on Friday when she spoke to Reuters.

He said this just before he was honored with the International Goya award at the Spanish Film Academy event in Barcelona.

“It was hard for me to even be on television,” said Sarandon. “I don’t know lately if it’s changed. I couldn’t do a big movie or anything to do with Hollywood.”

Sarandon, who was dropped by the United Talent Agency in November 2023 following controversial statements about the Israel-Gaza war, is an Academy Award winner and BAFTA recipient.

At an anti-Israel rally in Union Square in New York City on November 17, 2023, Sarandon said, “A lot of people are afraid to be Jewish at this time, and they feel what it’s like to be a Muslim in this country, which is often violent.”

He later apologized for what was said, saying in part, “I intend to talk about my concerns about the increase in hate crimes, and I said that Jewish Americans, as targets of rising antisemitic hatred, are ‘getting a taste of what it’s like to be Muslim in this country, so often subject to violence.’ This saying was a serious mistake, as it implied that until recently the Jews were strangers to persecution, when the opposite is true. “

He said he finally wanted representation outside of Hollywood.

“I finally got agents in England and Italy, and I’m working there,” Sarandon said. “I just did a film in Italy, and I did a play at the Old Vic for a few months. I know this Italian director who just hired me – he was told. not to hire me, so that’s up to date. He didn’t listen, but they had that conversation. Right now, I specialize in small films with directors who have never directed, in independent films. “

Sarandon also praised the leaders of Spain and Ireland for what he described as their support for Gaza.

“In a place where you feel oppression and scrutiny, seeing Spain and seeing the president and what he says and the support he gives about Gaza, and having actors like Javier Bardem come up with such a strong voice, is very important for us in the United States,” he said.

“When you turn on the TV and you see how strong Spain is and how clear it is to deal with these issues, it makes you feel like you’re not alone, and it makes you feel like there’s hope for all of you and the fact that you don’t hear that on television in the United States. You don’t know that’s there,” said Sarandon.
