Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night “lazy,” but history tells us another story: Trump broke his record for the longest speech in American history.
In fact, Trump, the oldest US president ever to be inaugurated, delivered the five longest State of the Union Addresses. His speech on Tuesday night clocked in at about 1 hour and 48 minutes, making it the number one hit, according to the American Presidency Project (APP).
“I thought the speech was lazy,” Pelosi told CNN after the speech.
Historically, most State of the Union addresses last about an hour.

Trump and former President Bill Clinton are the State of the Union State of the Union address powerhouses, with the two men making the five longest major speeches (including Trump’s 2025 speech before a joint session of Congress, which was not really a State of the Union because it was in the first year of his term) in terms of all-time, including standing and show of hands:
1. Donald Trump, 2026 – 1 hour, 48 minutes
2. Donald Trump, 2025 – 1 hour, 40 minutes
3. Bill Clinton, 2000 – 1 hour, 29 minutes
4. Bill Clinton, 1995 – 1 hour, 25 minutes
5. Donald Trump 2019 – 1 hour, 22 minutes
On Tuesday night he officially gave Trump the top pay from Clinton in between official State of the Union speeches.
Trump also holds the unofficial record for most words in an inaugural address, with his 2026 address averaging 10,599 words, according to APP. There were State of the Union addresses in American history that were delivered only in written form that measured in length by word count.

Pelosi was angered by Trump taking time to praise the beauty of America, such as the gold medal-winning US hockey team, and speaking to victims of violence, including Charlie Kirk’s widow Erika Kirk, Purple Heart recipient of US Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, and the Gold Star parents of late West Virginia National Guard member, US Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20 years old.
Wolfe and Beckstrom were shot by an Afghan war refugee while working as a security detail for the Trump administration in Washington, DC, last year.
“It’s one thing to admit patriotism and people are alive and everything when you have nothing to do with their courage or anything else,” Pelosi told CNN. “But you spend an hour and a half doing – what is the state of the nation?”

During his speech, the president addressed Pelosi directly while calling on Congress to “pass the Stop Insider Trading Act without delay.”
The bill, which has 91 Republican and two Democrat sponsors in the House, proposes to bar members of Congress, as well as their spouses and dependents, from trading stocks.
“Let’s make sure again that members of Congress cannot profit from corruption by using insider information,” Trump said, in one of the few moments of bipartisan applause.
“They stand for that. I don’t believe it. I don’t believe it,” he added, pointing to the Democrat side of the House.

“Did Nancy Pelosi stand up – if she did – I doubt it,” he continued. “Pass the Stop Insider Trading Act without delay.”
Pelosi and her husband, Paul Pelosi, have faced scrutiny for their investments in recent years. The former speaker of the House is one of the richest members of Congress.
