NYC delivery apps are suspending service as a tropical storm causes travel bans

Major delivery platforms are temporarily suspending their New York City operations as a powerful storm batters the region and Mayor Zohran Mamdani enforces a citywide travel ban.

Grubhub told FOX Business that it will shut down service in New York City and New Jersey at 7:30 pm ET on Sunday and will remain closed overnight.

“We will check again in the morning,” said a spokesperson for the company, stressing that the safety of its shipping partners remains a priority for the company.

DoorDash confirmed to FOX Weather that it will suspend service across the city starting at 8:30 pm ET Sunday — 30 minutes before the city’s 9 pm travel ban. The company noted that operations could be shut down immediately if the weather worsens.

The service is expected to be suspended until noon on Monday. DoorDash said the early suspension is intended to ensure orders are completed and deliveries are safely off the streets before the streets are officially closed.

“New York City is preparing for a historic storm — the first in nearly a decade — with a foot or more of snow expected and dangerous wind gusts,” a DoorDash spokesperson told FOX Weather. “We are suspending operations early to keep Dashers safe and off the roads before the curfew goes into effect.”

DoorDash said it will continue to monitor weather conditions and guidance from officials and will provide updates to delivery workers, vendors and customers as needed.

The service changes come as a powerful “bomb storm” batters the Northeast, bringing life-threatening blizzard conditions, wind gusts of up to 60 mph and more than two feet of snow to parts of the I-95 corridor, according to FOX Weather.

Mayor Mamdani declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, announcing that all city roads, highways and bridges will be closed to non-emergency vehicles from 9pm on Sunday and will remain closed until noon on Monday.

The blanket limit applies to all vehicles – including cars, trucks, scooters and e-bikes – with limited exemptions for emergency movements and critical service personnel.

“Please, for your own safety, stay at home, stay indoors and stay off the streets. Dangerous conditions put delivery workers, drivers and restaurant workers at risk,” said Mamdani. If you can, please look out for New Yorkers and prepare meals at home until the weather improves.
