59% of SEO jobs are now high-level roles: Study

SEO hiring is shifting to senior, strategy-led roles as AI reshapes search and expands the scope of the job. Semrush’s new analysis of 3,900 listings shows companies are now prioritizing leadership, evaluation, and multi-channel visibility over pure technology use.
Why do we care. SEO employment, career paths, and required skills are changing. Entry-level roles are focused on execution, while most of the demand is at the leadership level – owning a strategy across search, AI assistants, and paid channels, with a clear revenue impact.
What has changed. Senior roles are full, accounting for 59% of lists. Middle-level roles, such as professionals (15%) and managers (10%), follow far behind.
- Companies are shifting budgets to strategies as AI tools take on more work to do.
Skills change. On-demand capabilities go beyond traditional SEO to linking, testing, and decision-making:
- Project management appeared on the list at more than 30%.
- Communication led non-superior roles at 39.4%.
- Testing appeared in 23.9% of executive roles compared to 14% of other roles.
- Technical SEO appeared in about 6% of the listings.
Tools and channels. The SEO tech stack now includes analytics, paid media, and data.
- Google Analytics appeared in up to 47.7% of the list.
- Google ads appeared in 29% of listings.
- The demand for SQL has grown at a high level.
- AI tools like ChatGPT were being listed more and more.
AI expectations: AI literacy is moving from optional to expected:
- 31% of the top roles are mentioned for AI.
- About 10% indicated LLM orientation.
- AI search concepts such as AI search and AEO have come up again and again.
Pay and place a position: SEO is increasingly treated as a business activity.
- The median salary for senior roles reached $130,000, compared to $71,630 for others. Some lists were much higher.
- Degree preferences tend towards business and marketing.
Remote work is now common. Over 40% of listings offered remote options, with little variation in size.
