At least 33 bodies – including children and mummified remains stuffed into sacks – were exhumed from a mass grave in western Kenya on Thursday, raising questions about whether the bodies were smuggled out of hospital mortuary.

Investigators have recovered the remains of 25 children and 8 adults, as well as submerged body parts packed in gunny sacks, from a mass grave at a church cemetery in Kericho, authorities said.

“We were able to find out that these bodies were removed from the Nyamira District Hospital and taken to a private cemetery in Kericho,” Mohamed Amin, who heads the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, told the media.

He said detectives want to determine whether the bodies were legally disposed of after they were taken out of the morgue.

The Associated Press reported that Kenyan law allows hospitals and morgues to dispose of unclaimed bodies after 14 days with court approval.

State pathologists performed autopsies on Thursday to determine the cause of death, although the victims have not been released.

Authorities have arrested two people in connection with the case.

Local media reported that the bodies were transported in a government vehicle by unknown people and buried immediately, some undertakers reported to the police later.

“We need the authorities to do a thorough investigation,” said resident Brian Kibunja.

Another resident, Samuel Moso, said the authorities should “disclose whether the government is involved or whether a different group of people is behind the mass burial.”

In 2024, authorities found nine bodies in a landfill in Nairobi, the capital of the East African country.

The latest discovery comes as concern grows among some Kenyans about alleged police abuses.
